Finding God in the Mess.

No one is a stranger to feeling like life is messy. It can be easy to get caught up in the mess. Lucky for us God shows us how we can find a moment to breathe even in the most chaotic of times.

Let’s imagine...

You’ve just started a puzzle. The pieces are all there, but they are all scattered everywhere. You build one side and you’re on a roll. You are putting piece after piece together, and then all of a sudden you’re stopped right in your tracks looking for a piece that seems nonexistent. You know all the pieces are there, but It’s a disorganized mess sitting on the table. You search for what seems like hours, almost ready to give up, and then you find it. A burst of joy comes to your heart, and you feel accomplished. All the searching and testing of pieces no longer feels like a waste. Only a simple challenge that all together made one beautiful masterpiece.

That is life.

Life is messy and challenging and sometimes scattered, but it’s also correlative and joyful and filled with beauty. There will be moments where it’s hard, and moments where it’s easy. Each moment is a beautiful piece that collects together to form a life worth living. It forms a purpose that leads you back into the arms of God. A purpose to live life fully without hesitation and without regret. A place where shame, guilt, fear, and anger hold no power to the name, the name that is Jesus. A place where God teaches you to embrace the mess, and find the peace within.

“Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.”

‭‭I Peter‬ ‭4:12-13‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Life is treasuring the unseen ways God moves, even in the craziest of days. It’s finding a moment to yourself, even when you have twenty other things to do. It’s seeing the smile of a stranger while walking down the sidewalk. It’s recognizing beauty in the most complex of art pieces. It’s seeing a child laugh even after falling down. It’s breathing in the sweet aroma of a wildflower, that sways with no worry but the wind. It’s looking out upon the horizon, recognizing the endless things you have to experience. It’s in the smallest of moments that God can breathe life back into our unyielding spirits. And if not anything else, it’s knowing that in the end of suffering we receive a joy that exceeds all understanding.

Your mess has meaning and if you look close enough, in it is freedom. Freedom from all the stress and worries that life can bring. Freedom from perfection, so that you may embrace the wholeness that can only be found in God.

So, if life feels messy, just know that in the mess is where the most beauty can be found. It’s filled with the deepest desires that rest within the core of your spirit. And through it all God is walking with you, helping you to find the beauty in the mess.

“Occasionally, weep deeply over the life you hoped would be. Grieve the losses. Then wash your face. Trust God. And embrace the life you have.” John Piper
